Shifting Tides: Dance Films from Atlantic Canada returns September 15, 2023, a program of Atlantic-based dance and movement-based films, curated and hosted by Mocean Dance and presented at Atlantic Ballet Atlantique’s IMPACTfest 2023.
Film screening will take place on Friday, September 15th at 7:00pm at the Dieppe Cultural Centre as part of IMPACTfest 2023. Additionally, the films will also be hosted online with Mocean Dance.
2023 Theme: Folding In / Sweeping Out
We are seeking dance or movement-based short films by Atlantic artists that align with the 2023 theme Folding In/ Sweeping Out. We welcome films that reflect on the themes of intersectional identity, pluralism, renewal and sustainability, and evolution and change. Drawing from the past and imagining a future forward, how do we bring diverse perspectives on dance, place, identity, and community into new cycles of possibility? We seek to share a wide range of perspectives from Atlantic-based artists on how dance can guide, shape and inspire change for our future cultural ecosystems. Artists are encouraged to think about these themes of intersectionality, pluralism, and evolution in broad and creative terms, and share how their films relate to these ideas.
Eligibility: This opportunity is open to dance or movement-based artists and filmmakers currently based in the four Atlantic Provinces. Dance artists from all forms and styles are encouraged to apply. We welcome and strongly encourage people from all communities and intersecting identities to apply including Indigenous people, LGBTQIA+ & Two-Spirit people, Black people, people of colour, and people with disabilities.
PLEASE NOTE:
- One (1) submission per artist
- Films must be under 10 minutes in length to be considered
- Original content made explicitly for film/video
- Videos of documented live performances or livestream recordings will NOT be considered
- Artists must own copyrights to music, sound score, spoken or written text of video
Application & Selection Process:
Interested artists are asked to complete the online application form. Up to six films will be selected by Sara Coffin, Mocean Dance’s Co-Artistic Director, and artists will be notified by August 25, 2023.
Presentation and Fees:
Selected films will be presented at Shifting Tides: Dance Films from Atlantic Canada on Friday, September 15th at 7:30pm at the Dieppe Cultural Centre and via livestream as part of IMPACTfest’s programming. The films will also be shared on Mocean Dance’s website from September 17th to October 30th.
Fees: Selected filmmakers will be offered an honorarium for participation.
