Mocean Dance is presenting Shifting Tides: Dance Films from Atlantic Canada, a program of Atlantic-Based dance and movement-based films, curated and hosted by Mocean Dance and presented at Atlantic Ballet Atlantique’s IMPACTfest 2021 and the Canadian Dance Assembly’s (CDA) 2021 virtual gathering.

About the Gathering - Holding Space, Holding Change

CDA and Atlantic Ballet’s IMPACTfest are proud to come together to celebrate dance in Petgotiag (Moncton, New Brunswick) and online from September 17th to 23rd.

CDA will be hosting their biennial Gathering with meaningful shared experiences of togetherness as the central impetus. Titled Holding Space, Holding Change, the Gathering is an occasion to identify and reflect on pertinent social, political and environmental movements of this dance generation. What has led us to this point now, and where do we want to go? We are gathering with a specific focus on sustainability, sharing stories from the past, finding new ways to listen and learn from each other in the present, and dreaming about what we are bringing into the future of Canadian dance.

Holding Space, Holding Change will occur in parallel with Atlantic Ballet’s IMPACTfest, a national gathering and celebration of groundbreaking dance works from across Canada. Over the course of 10 days, audiences are invited to experience innovative performances, workshops, film and artist talks offered in a variety of spaces throughout the community. IMPACTfest is curated to support artists who self-identify as equity-seeking. Individuals of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to engage, learn, and share in the festival.

Shifting Tides: Dance Films from Atlantic Canada screening will take place on Sunday, September 19th at 7:00pm at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Moncton and via livestream. Additionally, the films will also be shared virtually during the CDA gathering.

Information on what we are seeking:

We are seeking dance or movement-based short films made by Atlantic-based artists that align with the gathering's overarching theme of Holding Space, Holding Change: Embracing Movements Past and Present to Renew and Sustain. We welcome films that reflect on the themes of renewal and sustainability -- drawing from the past and imagining a future, that offer ways forward through a sustainable lens, and/or that bring diverse perspectives on dance. We seek to share a wide range of perspectives from Atlantic-based artists on how dance can guide, shape and inspire sustainable futures.  Artists are encouraged to think about the themes of renewal and sustainably in broad and creative terms, and share how their films relate to these ideas.

This opportunity is open to dance or movement-based artists and filmmakers from, or currently based in, the four Atlantic Provinces. Dance artists from all forms and styles are encouraged to apply. We welcome and strongly encourage people from all communities and intersecting identities to apply including Indigenous people, LGBTQIA+ & Two-Spirit people, Black people and people of colour.
