Short Contract Opportunity with Mocean Dance: Seeking Understudy Dancers
Opportunity: Seeking two understudies to support Mocean’s repertoire activity
Understudy Roles: Mercurials and Utawtiwow Kijinaq - Our Mother’s Road
Date & Location: Monday, December 18th, 10-12:30 at Halifax Dance (1505 Barrington Street, Halifax).
Eligibility: Audition is open to dance artists based in Nova Scotia.
Contract Scope and Dates: January 22 to 26 and Jan 30/31, from 10-3pm (6 days) at Halifax Dance. Pay rate: $35/hr.
About the Roles: We are seeking one dancer to understudy Mercurials by Lydia Zimmer, commissioned by Mocean Dance in 2022, and one dancer ( age 30+) to understudy Utawtiwow Kijinaq - Our Mother’s Road, by Sarah Prosper and Sara Coffin, commissioned by Mocean Dance in 2022.
The purpose of these understudy roles is to create more opportunities for local dancers to connect with the company, learn current Mocean repertoire, and to build a pool of artists for touring the repertoire when needed (i.e. when the current cast is unavailable). Currently there are no performance opportunities attached to this contract.
Qualities we are seeking: Mercurials - Dancers with strong technical background rooted in contemporary and ballet technique, attention to detail, with a skill in fast twitch movement, moving sequentially and non sequentially from the joints. Utawtiwow Kijinaq - Our Mother’s Road - Dancers age 30+ (required to fit the age relationality built into the work), strong whole body movement, comfortable with partnering work, and improvisation.
Audition Details: Auditions will include a warm-up and learning material from each piece of repertoire. Dancers can choose to audition for either or both understudy roles.
