Research and Creative Residency (2020)
Collaborating Partners: Rebecca Lazier with Princeton University, Mocean Dance, Breaking Circus, Live Art Dance
In our 2020/2021 season, Mocean, along with local partners Live Art Dance and Breaking Circus, supported a Nova Scotia based research phase for Everywhere the Edges, a new performance installation of off-ground choreography performed within, on, under, and around a voluminous Janet Echelman net sculpture. Led by choreographer Rebecca Lazier, the project brings together the science and engineering of Echelman’s awe-inspiring sculptures with the human story of the creative team’s personal connections to the oceans and environment.
How do we navigate constant change? Is there an ethos for living in precarity? These questions drive Everywhere the Edges. Created in collaboration with five Nova Scotia dancers, the work is a synthesis of experimental dance, avant-garde circus, engineering, sound art, and public sculpture, that highlights human connectivity and resilience during times of unprecedented uncertainty. The development of Everywhere the Edges continues to evolve and is led by NYC-based choreographer Rebecca Lazier.
