Engage your body-mind connection with a free movement class led by Mocean Dance. Designed for inclusivity and aimed to create a sense of community in a creative atmosphere, this open community class will awaken your breath connection, mobilize your joints, and bring a little extra movement excitement to your day. We will lead class participants in a gentle warm-up designed to engage your physical senses and activate your weight flow through a playful approach to movement. This class will use a variety of music to lift your spirit and challenge your rhythmic flow.

Communities in Mocean - Older Adults Dance Project

Building on the eight year success of Mocean’s Library series Moving with MoceanCommunities in Mocean - Older Adults Dance Project is a new program, funded in-part from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, that will support retirees and seniors to take part in a community-led artistic process building their own dance creation for a public sharing.

Two groups of participants will meet weekly at two locations - Halifax Central Library and Northwood Central to engage in a creative process for a new community-led and community-centered dance creation. Both groups will join together to share in a public performance at the Northwood Centre Auditorium and Halifax Central Library’s Paul O’Regan Hall.

Program runs September 2023 - March 2024

For Schools

Let Mocean bring dance to life in your school! Mocean offers a choice of workshops, or guest-teaching for specific classes such as Dance 11, Drama, Physical Education and PAL classes.

Mocean Dance believes that infusing the education system with dance plays a vital role in developing individual and collective creative potential, builds resiliency and strength through play, helps to improve the student’s eye for art, and contributes to the growth and awareness of dance as a creative expression.

If you would like to bring Mocean Dance to your school, contact Sara at the Mocean office: (902) 425-4908 or saracoffin@moceandance.com

Residency with a Company Performance

Residencies are periods of time (three days to three weeks) when Mocean Dance lives in a community and offers options such as outreach and education activity, special workshops and events, creation, and performances. This mix can be tailored to your community’s needs and interests, and can involve everyone from small children to senior citizens, athletes to artists. Each residency is designed by the community presenter (and partners) in collaboration with the Co-Artistic Directors of Mocean Dance.

Residencies offer communities the opportunity to blend performances with their own choice of workshops, classes, lecture-demonstrations, film evenings, multi-disciplinary art sessions and more. Mocean also enjoys working with presenters and partners to develop new options to meet their specific community’s needs. All of our company members are skilled and perceptive teachers and communicators and enjoy working with all ages and skill levels to share their love of dance. Youths, adults and special populations can all engage in a wide range of fun, lively and educational activities during a Mocean Dance residency.

Mocean’s residencies engage the community in active participation, develop knowledge, skills, and interest in contemporary dance, and build audiences for dance performance. Creation-based residencies are often fundable through the Canada Council, and involve the development and premiere of a new work in the community setting, as well as some outreach activity and workshops.

Community outreach generally involves workshops, classes or events that are linked with a company performance. The company may come to your community for a day or two prior to a performance to build interest and awareness, and to set the stage for an upcoming show.
