Mocean Dance Recruitment: TREASURER, Board of Directors

The volunteer Board of Directors for Mocean Dance is currently recruiting for the role of TREASURER. Ideally, this individual understands financial accounting for nonprofit organizations (CPA preferred) and is committed to and interested in: 

  • Maintaining a leadership role on the Board’s finance committee;
  • Reviewing quarterly financial reports prepared by staff;
  • Approving payroll and other payments on a bi-weekly basis. Payroll consists of a staff of four, and varying contract workers ranging from 2 to 10 depending on project size which varies from month to month.  Other payments typically include 2-8 invoices per period;
  • Presenting staff generated quarterly financial reports to the Board and presenting the audited financial statements at the AGM with support from the Artistic Leadership; 
  • Providing occasional support to Mocean’s Finance Associate and staff;
  • Assisting Mocean staff/board with identification and implementation of best-practices for financial record keeping and reporting.

Criteria for Members

  • A passion for and commitment to the vision, mission, and values; 
  • The ability to advocate for Mocean in different facets of the community;
  • A willingness to share personal and professional contacts; 
  • The ability to represent the organization and act as spokesperson;
  • Engagement and commitment to stay informed of all development and decisions;
  • Attendance at performances and events, and introduce others to Mocean;
  • Participation in fundraising activities and identifying potential donors & sponsors;
  • A pledge to act in the best interest of the organization at all times;
  • A financial contribution that is meaningful, and willingness to invite new contributions.

Board of Directors Role and Purpose

The Board provides governance and oversight of Mocean’s operations and supports the staff as needed. Mocean employs two, full-Time Co-Artistic Directors that oversee the overall direction and management of the organization and two part-time staff, a Communications and Administrative Associate and a Finance Associate. Day-to-day administration is delegated to the Artistic leadership and staff. All of the organization's artistic programming and development is the responsibility of the Co-Artistic Directors. 

The board meets 4-6 times per year in person, or by Zoom as needed. Meetings typically last 2 hours and require 1 hour of preparation. Additional committee meetings are held on a needs basis. Typical committees include Fundraising, Nominating, Equity, and Human Resources. 

Board members are asked for a three-year commitment which may be renewed up to twice.

Mocean Dance Accomplishments and Organizational Highlights

  • Secured funding from Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, Communities, Culture and Heritage NS, Halifax, and new private sponsors and donors. In 2010, Mocean was one of the first dance companies to receive operating status from the Canada Council’s Creation/Production in Dance Program.
  • Worked with notable mentors on visioning, programming, touring, fundraising, marketing and organizational management.
  • Provided employment and development opportunities for company members, professional dance artists and other creatives.
  • Brought a regional voice to national and international dance stages.
  • Received the Lieutenant Governor’s Masterworks Award, the province’s highest honour for artistic accomplishment.
